Vancouver's Vegetarian Food Festival!

Vancouver's Annual Vegetarian Food Festival is almost here! This year's Taste Of Health fair will feature many vendors, free vegetarian and vegan food samples, a restaurant zone featuring delicious raw organic food from Organic Lives, a bookstore, a raffle, a silent auction and lots of free information about healthy and environmentally friendly eating! Keynote speaker for evening gala event will be best-selling author and Earthsave founder John Robbins. The Taste Of Health goals are simple: To show how delicious and easy it is to eat a plant-based diet and how small changes on our plate can have a dramatic impact on the planet.Hope to see you there! It's going to be tasty.

Apples!!!

Here is yet another timely event teaser, brought to you by your local Veg Club. This Saturday and Sunday (Oct. 16 & 17), UBC is holding its annual Apple Festival. If you love fall, and especially if you love its sweet taste cradled on your tongue, this is a reason to celebrate. (Unless you happen to work over the weekend, as I do.) Tickets are a whopping $2 and over 60 varieties of apples will be there, just waiting for a chance to tango with those incisors.

And don't forget that Thanksgiving does not have to end tonight - at least, not if you're invited to Leeanne's Thanksgiving potluck on Wednesday. Aren't invited yet? check out www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=101485933251630 and invite yourself! This is an EarthSave 25 and Under event, which basically means: slap on the lipstick, don that dress you haven't worn in years, and relive your twenty-something hay-day of yesteryear. Everyone is welcome. Except those of you hoping to creep on young, attractive, vegan hipsters over a plate of tofu. If this describes you, I know an awesome, seedy bar down on Hastings where you can go instead.

Love,
V.

Lucky us...

Dear Veggies,

Tomorrow (Friday, October the 8th, 2010) the one and only UBC Veggie Club is hosting its first veg-luck of the year! This decidedly dapper evening will kick off the new year in style as we gather, for veggie-licious company and a mouthful of good times, in the SUB (room 205) at 5pm. Bring your forks, your green creations, and a notepad because - get this - our first general meeting of the year is being hosted in the very same room, at the very same time!!! Excellent multitasking, Emma.

Also, it is my great pleasure to inform you of an upcoming event which, although not strictly Veggie Club's brainchild, is being hosted by one of our senior members on Oct. 13 and is sure to be veggie-tastic. Having attended a number of Leeanne's previous potlucks, good food, organic wine, and a night full of laughter and excellent fun is written in the stars. Everyone is welcome. Except for all of you turkeys and hams. Ha ha.

Help, I'm alive

Yes, we're still alive. But how do we know that YOU are? By subscribing to our blog, of course! We also encourage feedback. And article suggestions. This is your blog - so make yourselves at home and give us a friendly shout every once and a while. (And know that we are busy in the background, slaving away on what is sure to be an incredible year to come.)

Also, thank you to all those who attended the Walk for Farm Animals. It was awesome. We cleared a full lane of traffic as we marched downtown in the name of our farmyard friends. But don't take my word for it, check out these awesome pics!

Cheers,
V.

Quickie

Just to let all you devoted veggies know, tomorrow (Sept. 25) at 12:30 Walk for Farms Animals is being held. The Walk is an annual event "that helps spread the word about the treatment of animals on factory farms and raises vital funds for our rescue, education and advocacy work." It is being coordinated by Liberation BC and will commence outside the art gallery. More information can be had at walkforfarmanimals.org

On Tuesday (Sept. 28) CFI is hosting a debate at Langara College, entitled "Is it Wrong to Eat Meat?" Members of the Veggie Club will definitely be attending, and you should too! The event is being held in Room A130 and begins at 7pm. Because knowledge is power: cficanada.ca/vancouver/events/cfi_presents_should_we_be_vegetarian

Every exceptional event is made so by the people who attend. The world needs YOU!

Hope to see you all there,
V.

Imagine UBC (Plus Bonus Indoctrination!)

For all those who missed it - here are some pics hot off the grill from our first round of campus evangelization. Please, direct your attention to the cute cukes and manly snow peas manning our booth. Observe awhile their tender innocence, their steadfast faith in a new era, a brighter tomorrow, that happy day when lamb shall lie atwixt lion...

But wait! Before we share said photographic evidence, let us take this moment to remember that the dietary choices we make at every meal affect not only our bodies, but the collective reality of this planet. As at least one of our members loves to point out, according to a UN report published in 2006 (Livestock's Long Shadow) animal agriculture contributes more greenhouse gasses to our atmosphere than all forms of transportation, worldwide, combined. In other words, keep riding your bike - but don't forget that what's powering those legs counts at least as much.

Sunshine and beetroot,
V.

The Dawning of a New Dawn

Dearest veggies,

While the Veg Club has been a purveyor of vegetables and friendship since 2008, this occasion marks a passing of the torch and a coming of age as we - fashionably late as ever - embrace the burgeoning blogosphere. And so let us commemorate, on this most auspicious date, the posting of our first ever chapter. May it give a voice to those lowest on the food-chain. May it reinvent the meal and spawn a rabbit food revolution.

Remember to keep yourself up-to-date by subscribing to our blog. This is your one-stop source for market-fresh stories, upcoming event highlights, and a healthy dose of cruciferous jargon - brought in from the field straight to your plate. We also have a Facebook page which you should probably check out if you haven't already. ALSO, COME VISIT US AT OUR UBC CLUBS WEEK BOOTH!!! NOT ONLY IS IT TOTALLY AWESOME, BUT EVERYONE WHO COMES DOWN TO SIGN UP WILL HAVE THE CHANCE TO WIN SOME ENTIRELY INSANE BACK-TO-SCHOOL NECESSITIES LIKE ORGANIC POTATO CHIPS, CHOCOLATE, AND EVEN A VEGAN COOKBOOK.

And of course... please send us any thoughts or suggestions you may have. Got ideas for a crazy-awesome, veggie-friendly event? Need an excuse to write that tofu-inspired haiku? Post it here! We want to hear from you.

Peace and legumes,
V.
